Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk is joining the long list of NFL greats to try his hand at college football head coaching.

Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Marshall Faulk has been hired as the new head coach of HBCU Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Los Angeles Rams legend agreed to a three-year deal, Schultz reported.

In February, Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders hired Faulk to serve as the club’s running backs coach. The Faulk hiring came one year after fellow Pro Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was brought in by the Buffs as a senior quality control analyst, before getting promoted to pass rush coordinator this year.

Faulk is the latest former NFL star to land a head coaching position in the college ranks. Aside from Deion Sanders, former All-Pro wide receiver DeSean Jackson was hired as the new HC at Delaware State after the 2024 season.

Former Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick also began his HC career this year, when he was hired to take over the football program at Norfolk State.

Faulk was drafted second overall by the Indianapolis Colts in 1994, one spot after the Cincinnati Bengals used the top pick on Dan Wilkinson. Though Faulk had an excellent five-year tenure in Indianapolis, he took his game to another level after getting traded to the St. Louis Rams in 1999.

Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce, Torry Holt and Kurt Warner led the historic “Greatest Show on Turf” offense that guided the Rams to a Super Bowl 34 championship and a second big game appearance in the 2001 season.

In the 1999 season, Faulk became just the second running back to record 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a season, a club that only includes Roger Craig and Christian McCaffrey.

Aside from winning MVP honors in 2000, Faulk won three straight Offensive Player of the Year awards from 19991 to 2001.
