Mike Macdonald has built a reputation as a fairly buttoned-up coach since taking over in Seattle.

He rarely dishes out behind-the-scenes drama during interviews. That changed recently when he sat down with Graham Bensinger and opened up about a tense moment involving Broncos coach Sean Payton.

According to Macdonald, Payton once threatened to publicly accuse the Seahawks of running a Spygate-style cheating operation. The dispute traces back to Seattle’s 2024 season, specifically the Week 1 matchup between the two teams, which the Seahawks won 26-20.

Macdonald has stayed candid about his process in other interviews, too, including revealing an unnamed advisor who helped prepare Seattle for the Super Bowl.

Macdonald explained that his staff had pulled roughly 100 plays of Broncos training camp footage.

“We took like 100 plays from their training camp,” Macdonald told Bensinger, describing how Seattle scouted Denver’s offense. The footage came entirely from fan-posted social media clips, not from any team-planted operative.

Payton didn’t see it that way once he found out, well after the game had already been played.

“He got wind of it and he like lost it. This was the middle of the season,” Macdonald said, describing Payton’s reaction.

Payton Reportedly Compared The Situation To Real Cheating Scandals

Payton allegedly framed the accusation in serious terms, invoking comparisons to actual espionage cases rather than simple game-planning. He reportedly believed Seattle had done something closer to planting a person inside Denver’s facility.

Seattle pushed back hard once Payton raised the threat. The team argued the footage came from publicly available fan videos, a clear difference from anything resembling true corporate or athletic espionage.

Macdonald and general manager John Schneider reportedly countered by threatening legal action if Payton went public with a false accusation.

The Dispute Cooled Off, But Left A Mark On Denver’s Camp Policy

That pushback appears to have worked.

Denver likely considered tightening phone policies at training camp following the incident, given how exposed that footage left them.

This latest story shows how much preparation goes into Seattle’s approach against both divisional and non-divisional opponents.

Payton, for his part, has had other integrity questions follow his program this year, including a separate tampering investigation involving Drew Brees.
