Madden NFL has rolled out plenty of questionable features over the years. An old video is bringing a particular feature back into the conversation, with a post on X asking whether it’s the worst addition the series ever made.

The clip shows a Chargers-Ravens game from the San Diego era. Phillip Rivers completes a throw, but the receiver is tackled immediately on a 3rd-and-8.

The user simply rewinds and makes the throw again, this time moving the chains in the red zone.

That feature let players take a down back and replay it. It debuted in Madden NFL 09, which launched on August 12, 2008, with Brett Favre on the cover. Engadget reported on it months earlier, and called it an interesting addition.

Madden features have always drawn debate. This summer, fans complained about the Tush Push in Madden 27 after EA’s first-look images. Rewind drew its own skeptics back in 2008.

Players could rewind downs after any bad outcome. A failed fourth-down conversion or an interception qualified. EA also paired it with a feature called Backtrack, which showed players the mistake they made.

The feature worked on both offense and defense. Defenders could even use it to wipe out an opponent’s progress or score. One Pastapadre writer argued it could help new players learn and let veterans review their own play.

Before each game, players chose how many rewinds each team received. GameSpot‘s preview listed three per game as the default. Ranked online games disabled the feature entirely, while unranked matches made it optional.

Engadget’s staff questioned whether anyone would actually use it in multiplayer. They also wondered if opponents would find it annoying. The feature carried over to Madden NFL 10, where players switched it on in the options menu.

Rewind isn’t the only older feature fans keep bringing up. The QB vision cone debuted in Madden NFL 06 and lasted three years. It projected a cone of light onto the field to show where the quarterback was looking. Throws inside the cone got accuracy bonuses, while throws outside it got penalties.

Critics argued that it made lower-rated quarterbacks too hard to play with. Game Informer’s Matthew Kato later defended it as a good idea that deserved more development.

The clip above definitely took fans back, with many sharing their thoughts on the feature.

“This and the vision cone” one wrote.

“Take it you weren’t here for cone vision when that first dropped” another said.

“Linebackers were OP in that game. Totally justifiable” one fan offered.

“No because this game actively cheated tf outta you. It leveled the playing field against the cpu😂” one person claimed.

“man. idk. I loved that feature. and I wish they would bring it back. 😂” another user said.

“Anytime Mahomes throws a pick” someone else joked.

Rewind was gone by Madden NFL 12, so the feature has sat on the shelf for years. One gamer clearly wants it back. Another says the game cheated players anyway.
