Deshaun Watson made his first home appearance in nearly two years Saturday. Cleveland Browns fans greeted him with loud boos at Huntington Bank Field. The quarterback entered in the third quarter of a 31-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills. He completed just 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and one interception.

The sparse crowd made its feelings clear multiple times. Boos hit him before his first snap. More followed an incomplete pass. Fans booed again after a three-and-out and after the interception.

Watson did not hide his reaction after the game. He called the response personal and disrespectful.

“It has nothing to do about the performance. It’s a little bit more personal than that. So I think that’s a disrespectful thing,” Watson said.

He pointed back to October 2024. That night he tore his Achilles on the same field. Some fans cheered as he left on a cart.

“Last time I played on this field I tore my Achilles and that same fanbase, they cheered when I got hurt,” Watson said. “What does that have to do with anything about performance? When a person gets hurt, especially for your own city, and they cheer.”

Watson said he expected a better reception. He spent time away recovering from two Achilles surgeries. He did charity work in Cleveland. He stayed around the facility and city.

“I thought being away for two years and working myself back… would help,” he said. “I guess it hasn’t.”

He plans to keep his full feelings private with family. He will move forward as a “child of God.”

Shedeur Sanders started the game and looked sharper, even though he was picked off by Damar Hamlin, who took the chance to troll the second-year quarterback. He completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Watson’s tenure in Cleveland remains rocky. The Browns traded three first-round picks for him in 2022 and handed him a fully guaranteed $230 million deal. He has started only 19 games. Injuries and an earlier suspension limited him.

This latest outburst adds tension to the ongoing quarterback competition. Coach Todd Monken has kept both Watson and Sanders in the mix. The decision for Week 1 could come soon.

Watson’s comments and limited production open more room for debate. One earlier throw in the same contest already sparked strong fan reactions online.

Watson remains determined to compete. The home crowd made its stance clear. The relationship between the quarterback and Browns fans stays fractured heading into the regular season.
