Jaxson Dart gave Giants fans a familiar scare in his 2026 preseason debut. He headed to the medical tent after a hard hit against the Vikings.
The second-year quarterback took the blow late in the first quarter at MetLife Stadium. Vikings safety Jay Ward came free on a blitz that running back Tyrone Tracy failed to pick up. He hit Dart on second-and-10.
Dart got up slowly. Team spotters sent him to the blue tent for evaluation, according to CBS Sports.
Dart Answered The Scare With A Touchdown
The evaluation didn’t take long. Dart was cleared to return within two plays. He came back onto the field on second-and-15 to start the second quarter, working out of the shotgun. He connected with rookie receiver Malachi Fields on an improvised 15-yard touchdown pass, giving the Giants a 7-3 lead.
Dart also absorbed an earlier sack in the same series, this one from Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner on third-and-10, which cost New York seven yards. The opening drive lasted just six plays and produced five total yards before Dart went back out for the second series that ended with the touchdown.
This wasn’t Dart’s first visit to the medical tent. He made five trips there during his rookie season, a stretch that drew joint scrutiny from the NFL and NFLPA over how teams handle concussion evaluations.
That history has made him someone spotters watch closely on every hard hit, and it’s shaped plenty of conversation around his game heading into 2026. New head coach John Harbaugh has already acknowledged the health questions Dart carries into this season after last year’s run of evaluations.
Dart’s Play Style Remains The Root Of The Concern
Dart’s aggressive, high-contact approach has followed him since he entered the league. He’s shown a willingness to absorb hits rather than slide or step out of bounds, a habit that resurfaced even away from football this offseason when he launched himself off a boat during a Fourth of July trip that fans joked he handled more carefully than expected.
Saturday’s game marked New York’s preseason opener under Harbaugh, who inherited the starting job battle after Brian Daboll’s firing. Dart worked 11 total snaps, four of them from the shotgun, and completed three of his four shotgun pass attempts.
The Giants ultimately have bigger priorities than one preseason snap count. Keeping their franchise quarterback upright and available remains the clearer goal, and Saturday’s outcome offered at least a little reassurance on that front.
