Jaxson Dart took a heavy hit during the New York Giants’ preseason opener against the Vikings. The second-year quarterback ended up in the blue medical tent once again. He did not hide his frustration afterward.

The play happened late in the first quarter of Saturday’s 13-10 loss. Vikings safety Jay Ward came free on a blitz. Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. missed the assignment.

Ward leveled Dart with a strong shot to the body. Dart stayed down for a few seconds before rising slowly. Officials and medical staff quickly directed him to the tent.

After the game Dart spoke openly about the situation.

“As far as the blue tent, I really respect the rules and the thought behind NFL has of keeping players healthy and reviewing things,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m still puzzled by it just feeling like every time that I get hit, I find my way in there, which at times I still try to wrap my head around.”

“I never thought that I was going to be taken out,” he continued. “So I’m going to keep playing until they tell me I’m not playing. I want to be out there.”

Last season Dart visited the tent five times across his starts. He was diagnosed with one concussion and missed two games. The latest check continues a familiar storyline for the dual-threat quarterback.

Dart’s physical running style draws extra attention from spotters. Even hits that appear to land mostly on the body often trigger the evaluation. Giants fans hope the visits become less common this year.

The quarterback remains the clear starter heading into the regular season. His ability to bounce back quickly still stands out.

Dart underwent a concussion evaluation between quarters. He was cleared after a short check. The young quarterback returned to the field almost immediately.

On his first play back, Dart scrambled and found rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields. The 15-yard touchdown pass gave the Giants a 7-3 lead.

Dart finished his limited action 3-of-4 for 26 yards and the score. He absorbed two sacks in just 14 snaps. Coach John Harbaugh said he had no issue putting him back in.

Dart later told reporters the hit only knocked the wind out of him. He stressed that he respects the NFL’s player-safety rules. Still, the pattern bothers him.
