Jerry Jones Makes Stunning Admission About His Dallas Cowboys Exit

Jerry Jones has spent more than three decades running the Dallas Cowboys. After buying the team for $140 million back in 1989, he has stayed right in the middle of every major decision.

Now 83, the longtime owner gave an honest answer about how his time in Dallas will eventually wrap up. Speaking to The Athletic, Jones said fans shouldn’t expect a formal handover or early warning.

“One day I just won’t be here to toss my two cents in,” Jones said.

The Cowboys have not reached the Super Bowl since the 1990s. Dallas won three titles during that decade, but the team has struggled to return to the league’s biggest stage. The Cowboys missed the playoffs in 2025 despite ranking among the NFL’s top offenses.

Dallas hopes to change that in 2026. After loading up on defense, including adding former Ohio State star Caleb Downs, the Cowboys are setting their sights on a deep playoff run.

Jones Says His Exit Could Come Without Warning

Jones said he plans to keep running the Cowboys as long as he can. He also made it clear that he does not expect to plan his departure in advance.

“I don’t have a succession plan, I don’t,” Jones said. “One day I just won’t be here to toss my two cents in.”

Stephen Jones, Jerry’s son, could eventually take over the franchise. Stephen already plays a major role with the Cowboys, but the family has not set an official timeline for a change in leadership.

Jerry Jones also praised his son’s approach to leading the organization. He said Stephen knows when to give others room while still showing plenty of intensity.

“He’s about as good as anybody I’ve ever been around in giving deference when he should,” Jerry said. “Now, don’t confuse that with lack of intensity.”

Stephen also does not want to focus on a future without his father running the team.

“We certainly don’t wanna think about that,” Stephen said. “We don’t want it to be that way.”

For now, Jerry Jones remains firmly in charge.
