The Kansas City Chiefs are set to release offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor in what is perhaps a surprising move. And Patrick Mahomes isn’t expected to be thrilled about it.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs have informed the 28-year-old that they will cut him. That is, unless they work out a trade.
The decision will give the team much-needed cap space, saving them $20 million.
“The Chiefs are releasing former starting OT Jawaan Taylor, creating some much-needed cap space, source says,” Rapoport reported on Monday morning. “Due a $27.4M cap hit, Taylor’s absence creates breathing room.”
This development marks the latest in a cap-saving drive by the Chiefs, who restructured Mahomes’ contract and released veteran defensive end Mike Danna in February
Sources also expect them to cut Drue Tranquill and Noah Gray.
The Chiefs began the offseason more than $57 million over the cap.
The team needs to be under the NFL’s salary cap by the start of the new league year on March 11. The aforementioned moves will save nearly $53 million against the cap.
Jawaan Taylor Was The Most Penalized Player During His Time With The Chiefs

Taylor, a $27.4 million cap hit, was heading into the final year of his four-year $80 million deal. He was the most penalized player in the NFL in his 45 games with the Chiefs, having accrued 49 penalties, 41 of which were accepted.
The Florida native was a standout for the Gators, playing from 2016 to 2018 and becoming a key starter on the offensive line. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected him as the 35th overall pick in 2019.
His impact was immediate. Taylor started all 16 games as a rookie, earning a spot on the PFWA All‑Rookie Team.
He signed with the Chiefs in 2023, following a four-year spell in Jacksonville, helping the team win a Super Bowl that season.
He has started 111 games since entering the NFL and likely won’t have any difficulty landing on a new team following the Chiefs’ decision to cut him.
