Kansas City Chiefs Begin Their Offseason Roster Overhaul With Massive String Of Notable Cuts

The Kansas City Chiefs were probably the most disappointing team in the NFL this season. They didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.
That’s why they will have to make some major decisions about their roster in the offseason. Notably, that starts with cutting some dead weight.
That’s exactly what they did on Tuesday, moving on from seven players whose contracts weren’t renewed.
Per Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports, the contracts of seven practice squad players expired today. As such, OG Nick Broeker, WR Jason Brownlee, RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, DE Malik Herring, FB Carson Steele, DT Marlon Tuipulotu, and TE Tre Watson will all be free agents.
Other than Edwards-Helaire and Steele, both of whom played for the team in previous seasons, neither of these players made much of an impact during their time with the team.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ Coaching Staff Might Also Change A Lot

Notably, it’s also worth noting that the Chiefs’ coaching staff will go through a major overhaul. They already fired a coach, and according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy could be on his way out:
“With offensive coordinator Matt Nagy’s contract up, several scenarios are in play — including Nagy getting a head coaching job,” Pelissero and Rapoport wrote. “He’ll be among the top candidates, a rare one this cycle with experience and a background on offense. If he doesn’t get a head job, leaving to take over as a primary play-caller elsewhere is also possible.”
The Chiefs will have no shortage of potential replacements if that’s the case. Then again, they will probably be former members of Andy Reid’s coaching tree:
“In either case, the Chiefs could welcome back former Reid assistants such as Mike Kafka or Eric Bieniemy, both of whom could inject some new ideas from their previous places of employment while retaining some familiarity. In addition, a substantial roster reboot is also afoot, with the team significantly over the cap and coming off a rare disappointing season,” the report added.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo will also be a head coaching candidate, so he’s another coach who may not be there next season. Whatever the case, one thing’s for sure: Something has to change in Kansas City.
