The Kansas City Chiefs head into the 2026 offseason facing a lot of uncertainty. The 2025 season went badly, and the team missed the playoffs. Things got even worse when Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL, an injury that stunned the league and changed the Chiefs’ plans.
Mahomes is aiming to be ready for the start of the 2026 season, but nothing is guaranteed for Week 1. The quarterback depth is also a concern. Gardner Minshew and Chris Oladokun are not under contract for 2026, leaving the Chiefs with few options.
Because of that, Kansas City Chiefs is looking outside the team for help. Around the league, there is growing talk about the Chiefs considering an unexpected move. The focus is on a veteran quarterback who can provide stability rather than star power. One experienced name keeps coming up as a possible fit.
Russell Wilson Emerges As A Logical Bridge Option

Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox connected Kansas City to New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson. Knox discussed the idea while reviewing potential landing spots for quarterbacks who could change teams.
“Wilson is unlikely to find a true starting opportunity this offseason, but he could make sense as a bridge option for the Kansas City Chiefs,” Knox wrote. “Patrick Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL, and neither Gardner Minshew nor Chris Oladokun is under contract for 2026.”
Wilson spent most of the 2025 season as a backup with the Giants. Rookie Jaxson Dart handled the starting job. Wilson stepped in when needed and filled a limited role. That role may define the rest of his career.
Knox believes Kansas City offers something rare for Wilson at this stage. “Joining Kansas City might allow Wilson to start a few more games, perhaps be part of a Chiefs resurgence, and calmly shift into the backup phase of his career,” he wrote.
Wilson played six games for the New York Jets in 2025. He completed 58% of his passes, threw for 831 yards, had three touchdowns and three interceptions, and ran for 106 yards.
The Chiefs wouldn’t rely on Wilson as their main quarterback. They would use him to stabilize the team, start early games if Mahomes isn’t ready, and help guide younger players while supporting Mahomes later in the season.
Kansas City still sees Mahomes as their long-term star. Bringing in Wilson would serve as insurance, give the team time to adjust, and keep them competitive while waiting for Mahomes to return.
