Kirk Herbstreit Unable To Walk For Weeks After Devastating Injury

Kirk Herbstreit shared a tough offseason story on Friday. The ESPN analyst appeared on The Pat McAfee Show. He described a sudden and painful back issue that changed his summer.
The problem started in Las Vegas. Herbstreit attended Kenny Chesney’s opening night at The Sphere. He traveled there with his wife for the show. The next morning they went to breakfast. Herbstreit stood up to leave the table. His back locked up without warning.
“Got up from breakfast, couldn’t walk. Just [my back] locked up,” he said.
He needed a wheelchair to move around.
“I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t leave my house for six weeks,” Herbstreit told McAfee. The injury kept him completely homebound.
Kirk Herbstreit Faces Serious Nerve Compression
Kirk Herbstreit later learned the full extent of the damage. Doctors found significant degenerative issues in his spine. He also had stenosis.
“I have so much degenerative stuff, I have stenosis. I didn’t know any of this. I didn’t know any of these words six weeks ago,” he explained.
A bone spur compressed his L5 nerve. The pressure created constant burning and sharp pain.
“I had these zingers in my upper quad and upper glute. I just couldn’t walk,” Herbstreit said.
The symptoms made daily movement impossible.
NFL Chief Medical Officer Dr. Allen Sills lives in Nashville. He examined Herbstreit and helped diagnose the problem. Dr. Raymond Gardocki then performed a non-invasive procedure. He removed the bone spur pressing on the L5 nerve.
“That took the burning sensation out of my right leg,” Herbstreit noted.

The first surgery brought immediate relief. Two weeks later, Gardocki completed a second procedure. He cleared bone fragments and relieved pressure on the L4 nerve.
Kirk Herbstreit Returns to Walking and Ready for Season
The analyst revealed he can walk again after the procedures. He has been mobile for about one week.
“I’ve been able to walk here for about a week now. I’m ready to roll now,” he said.
The progress feels encouraging. He walks two to three miles each day on trails. The steady activity helps rebuild his strength and mobility.
Herbstreit faces a demanding fall schedule. He works College GameDay on Saturday mornings. He also calls Saturday Night Football and Thursday Night Football on Amazon.
The recovery couldn’t come at a better moment. Fans will see him back on air soon across ESPN and streaming platforms.
The sudden injury tested him physically and mentally. He now feels prepared for the long football season ahead.
