Kyle Shanahan made the rounds on social media in the past 24 hours after fans spotted how fast he has aged during his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan took the job when he was 37, as he was tasked to revitalize a team that struggled a lot since their trip to the Super Bowl.

After two trips to the big game, four NFC championship games and three NFC West division titles, Shanahan remains hungry. The Niners have failed to reach glory again, but the team proved doubters wrong in 2025, finishing second in the division standings and going all the way to the divisional round.

A couple of days after his salty press conference following the 41-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Shanahan became a popular topic on social media again. This time, fans found out how different he looked in 2017, when he addressed Robert Saleh’s firing.

Former NFL Player Warns Kyle Shanahan, 49ers Ahead Of 2026 NFL Season

In the wake of an abysmal performance against the Seahawks, the San Francisco 49ers are back in line to try to challenge for the NFL throne. With Robert Saleh out, as he became the Tennessee Titans’ new head coach, the 49ers will need to find the right person to replace a terrific defensive coordinator.

Former player turned analyst Emmanuel Acho warned Shanahan about the ramifications of that move.

“San Francisco 49ers, you are, and we are in gigantic trouble,” Acho said on “Speakeasy.” “I think it’s a terrible move for [Robert] Saleh. You saw what happened to the defense when Robert Saleh went to the Jets. Kyle Shanahan was absolutely lost… Dumbfounded.

“Defense went from top 5 in football to bottom 15 in football. San Francisco 49ers, it does not matter if Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are out there. If the defensive coach hired is not the right one, the season is over before it ever begins.”

The 49ers could be in trouble again. However, a former member of their defense, Richard Sherman, floated an intriguing idea for Shanahan: go for Browns DC Jim Schwartz if he doesn’t get the head-coaching job in Cleveland.
