In the wake of the Arizona Cardinals’ decision to release Kyler Murray after seven seasons, several teams emerged as potential suitors for the former No. 1 overall pick. On Wednesday, reports suggested that he was close to finding a new home in the NFL.

Murray only posted a winning season (11-6 in 2021) during his seven-year tenure with the Cardinals. He only played five games in 2025, going 110 of 161 for 962 yards and six touchdowns with three interceptions.

Multiple teams around the league will be interested in landing him on a minimum deal, but the competition to acquire his services will go beyond the NFL.

Kyler Murray could join Russell Wilson and Tim Tebow, two modern-day quarterbacks who had the chance to play in the MLB system, if he decides to move away from the NFL. Once the Cardinals release him, the Athletics would welcome him.

The A’s hold Murray’s baseball rights. They selected the prospect with the No. 9 pick in the 2018 MLB draft. He chose to play professional football, with Arizona landing him with the first overall selection in 2019.

“Kyler is an elite NFL quarterback and I’m sure there are plenty of opportunities for him to continue his football career,” A’s general manager David Forst told MLB.com on Wednesday. “That said, he and his baseball representatives know that we’re always open to him exploring a return to baseball with the A’s if that time ever comes.”

Murray was highly touted coming out of college. However, seven years without playing baseball could be a lot for the former outfielder.
