Aaron Rodgers left his former head coach, Matt LaFleur, speechless on Monday night.

The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback likely played his last NFL game in this week’s playoff loss. Rodgers and the Steelers suffered a 30-6 blowout loss at home to the Houston Texans, which has him considering his future.

Rodgers had previously spoken highly of his head coach, Mike Tomlin, on multiple occasions. He was complimentary of the 53-year-old after Monday’s defeat, but included LaFleur this time around.

The veteran quarterback suggested it was foolish to suggest either coach should lose their jobs after how well they’ve performed over the years.

Tomlin has long felt the ire of Steelers fans despite posting 19 straight winning seasons. Fans were also calling for LaFleur’s head after the Green Bay Packers blew an 18-point lead to the Chicago Bears.

“And for either of those two guys to be on the hot seat is really apropos of where we’re at as a society and a league,” Rodgers said, “because obviously Matt’s done a lot of great things in Green Bay and we had a lot of success. Mike T.’s had more success than damn near anybody in the league for the last 19, 20 years.”

He added:

“And more than that, though, when you have the right guy and the culture’s right, you don’t think about making a change. But there’s a lot of pressure that comes from the outside, and obviously that sways decisions from time to time. But that’s not how I would do things, and not how the league used to be.”

Mike Tomlin stepped down from his position as the Steelers HC on Tuesday. However, it appears LaFleur will remain in Green Bay. The Packers are reportedly keen on agreeing an extension.

The latter addressed Rodger’s comments via a text message to The Athletic.

“I’m speechless,” he said. “He didn’t have to do that, but he did. (It’s) one of the nicest compliments (of) my life. I’m so appreciative of him for that.”

LaFleur and Rodgers helped the Packers to two NFC Championship Game appearances and three consecutive 13-win seasons.

They struggled in 2022, missing the playoffs after tallying an 8-9 record before Rodgers left. He spent two underwhelming seasons with the New York Jets, the first of which was a total blank due to an Achilles injury.

He signed a one-year deal to play for Pittsburgh this season, which is now near its end.
