Michele Tafoya left her role as a sideline reporter for NBC’s Sunday Night Football in 2022. It was right after Super Bowl LVI, concluding an 11-year run with the network and a 327-game national primetime NFL reporting career.

She chose to walk away voluntarily to pursue other professional and personal interests. Nobody had a clue that her second career would take her into politics.

Tafoya wanted to speak freely on social and political issues rather than remain bound by a public company’s expectations. Speaking out about everything is exactly what she did. She certainly did not care about the backlash it drew.

Michele Tafoya ran as a Republican in the 2026 United States Senate election in Minnesota. Additionally, she made it this far after winning the GOP primary in August.

Tuesday was the big day around the country, and for hours, it appeared that Tafoya was going to come out victorious. However, once the final numbers came in, it was obvious she was going to lose.

Tafoya trailed Flanagan by roughly 10 points with 80% of the vote reported. NBC called the race for Flanagan shortly after midnight.

Peggy Flanagan ended up with 1,520,299 votes while Tafoya had 1,232,683 votes.

Flanagan, Minnesota’s lieutenant governor, will become the first Native American woman elected to the upper chamber. The result is a setback for Republicans. Consequently, they had hoped to capitalize on scandals and flip a traditionally Democratic state’s open seat.

Tafoya has not announced official plans for her next role. She will continue her media and podcasting presence.
