Mike McCarthy is returning to coaching.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to hire the former Dallas Cowboys head coach as their new HC after courting him in the wake of Mike Tomlin’s departure

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has cited sources noting that the “Steelers plan to hire former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy as their head coach.”

McCarthy is set to become just the fourth head coach in Pittsburgh since 1969. He joins a franchise known for its organizational stability, marking a homecoming.

The 62-year-old was born in Pittsburgh and served as an assistant and wide receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

While the Steelers are tied for the most Super Bowls in NFL history, with six, they haven’t won since the 2008 season. They haven’t made it back since 2010 and haven’t won a playoff game since 2016.

Tomlin never had a losing season with the team. However, he lost his last seven playoff games as a head coach.

He chose to step down after Pittsburgh went out in the first round this year.
