NFL fans going to outdoor playoff games this weekend could face dangerous cold, and the National Weather Service is urging caution.

The NWS issued weather warnings for several playoff cities, with freezing temperatures and possible snow expected. Officials warned fans to dress properly and prepare to sit outside for long periods.

Cold weather risks are real. In January 2024, extreme cold hit Kansas City during the Chiefs vs. Dolphins playoff game. Some fans suffered severe frostbite, and doctors later had to amputate fingers and toes.

The Research Medical Center in Missouri confirmed the impact. The hospital said it treated “dozens of people who had experienced frostbite” during that cold stretch. Hospital staff said several injuries came from fans who attended the game.

That past experience is why officials are stressing safety again this NFL weekend.

The American Academy of Dermatology shared simple advice for fans sitting through cold-weather games. Doctors said preparation is the only way out.

They told fans to wear loose layers. Start with synthetic fabric close to the skin to keep moisture away. Add wool or fleece for warmth. Finish with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Heavy coats and ski pants help trap heat.

Doctors stressed foot protection for this severe weather. Wear two pairs of socks. Use moisture-wicking socks first, then wool socks. Waterproof boots that cover the ankles work best. Tight shoes can increase frostbite risk.

Cover your head and face. Wool or fleece hats help, and scarves or face masks protect the nose and cheeks.

Hands matter too. Mittens or insulated gloves keep hands warmer than thin gloves.

Moreover in this type of weather staying dry is an important factor. Snow or sweat in clothes and boots can quickly raise frostbite risk. Change layers if you start sweating.

They also advised staying hydrated. Drinking water helps reduce frostbite risk. Avoid alcohol, which can make cold injuries more likely.

Fans should watch for warning signs. Red skin, stinging, burning, or numbness can signal frostbite. Anyone who feels these symptoms should go indoors right away.

Snow and freezing temperatures could impact some NFL games, including Patriots vs. Texans on Sunday.

The message from doctors is simple and clear that is, dress smart, stay alert, and stay safe.
