Some things are just bigger than sports in general, and one of them is having the love of your family. Unfortunately, for Patriots rookie Eli Raridon, the love that he had for a family member has led to sheer heartbreak.

He and his family now have to figure out how to navigate through extreme grief following the loss of their child. The devastated parents expressed their profound grief alongside their unwavering spiritual faith in a joint Instagram post.

New England Patriots rookie tight end Eli Raridon and his wife, Anna, recently shared a heartbreaking tragedy. The young couple announced the devastating loss of their newborn son, Peter James, on Tuesday afternoon.

During a routine 20-week ultrasound anatomy scan, doctors diagnosed their baby boy with anencephaly. This severe and incurable neural tube defect prevents parts of the brain and skull from developing correctly. Medical professionals informed the grieving parents that their child would not survive outside of the womb.

Knowing this grim medical reality beforehand, Anna still courageously chose to carry her sweet baby to term. Little Peter James was subsequently born on September 11 before peacefully passing away shortly after birth.

Anna beautifully wrote that her son’s brief life remained incredibly precious and deeply meaningful to their family.

“Our angel, Peter James Raridon, was born on September 11th,” a post on Anna’s Instagram account reads. “When Eli and I went in for our 20th-week anatomy scan, excited to see our sweet baby boy, our hearts were forever changed.”

“Our little one was diagnosed with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which he would not survive outside the womb. While we are absolutely devastated that we were unable to bring our baby boy home, I am grateful to have loved him deeply, kept him safe, and had been his home for the past nine months before he was called back to Heaven.”

The couple celebrated their wedding in May of 2025. Peter was the couple’s first child.

The Patriots selected Eli Raridon in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Raridon has put together a promising start despite enduring an immense family tragedy.

The third-round draft pick out of Notre Dame has appeared in two games so far this season. He recorded his first career NFL reception during the team’s season-opening game against the Seattle Seahawks. Remarkably, that catch resulted in a two-yard touchdown to get his professional scoring career underway.

He followed up that achievement by making another impactful play during a week two victory over Pittsburgh. Raridon hauled in a spectacular 30-yard reception.

Unfortunately, a nagging thigh injury forced the young player to miss the subsequent week three matchup. He continues to receive immense community support while bravely balancing his athletic duties with profound personal grief.
