In July 2017, Patrick Mahomes was about to begin his NFL journey. The Kansas City Chiefs had just picked him in the first round. His path seemed clear actually, learn the offense, compete for the starting job, and start building his career.
Then life took an unexpected turn. Mahomes traveled to Iceland to support his longtime girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, as she chased her own dream.
Instead of moving to Kansas City, Brittany headed overseas weeks after the draft to play professional soccer in Iceland. The move pushed the couple into a long-distance relationship after being together since they were teenagers. For a while, football was not the only priority.
When they arrived in Reykjavik, the pressure became real. Chiefs fans recognized Mahomes even that far from home. Brittany focused on her new soccer life. Patrick carried Andy Reid’s playbook everywhere, trying to stay locked in while supporting her.
It was a difficult balancing act between love and the biggest opportunity of his life.
Iceland Tested Everything For Mahomes

Brittany joined UMF Afturelding after a strong college career at Texas Tyler. She wanted to see how far soccer could take her. “An opportunity opened up for me in Iceland and I could never pass up such an amazing experience to go do what I love.,” she said at the time.
Patrick stayed with her for about ten days. Sigurbjart Sigurjonsson, the club president, hosted them. He did not know Mahomes’ status at first. “I had no idea who he was,” Sigurjonsson told reporters in 2018. “We didn’t suspect he was some kind of star.”
Mahomes studied constantly. Sigurjonsson noticed the thin folder in his hands. “Of course, he was preparing for the season,” he said. Mahomes even slept on the couch because the bed felt too small.
Brittany trained hard but struggled on the field. She made five appearances and scored twice. The club later moved on. “She wasn’t strong enough for the league,” Sigurjonsson said.
Distance wore on her. Patrick returned to the US, and Brittany followed later and left pro soccer behind. She rebuilt her career in fitness in Kansas City.
“Setting down roots in Kansas City was huge for us,” Mahomes said after she joined him. Years later, they invested together in the Kansas City Current. Brittany now plays a key role with the team.
That trip to Iceland could have pulled them apart. Instead, it changed their relationship. They both followed their dreams and learned how to adjust. In the end, they stayed together and now support each other in both life and their careers.
