Sam Darnold is a Super Bowl winner; nothing’s ever going to take that away from him.
It’s more than can be said for his money, though. The State of California is taking a big chunk of it away.
The quarterback helped the Seattle Seahawks win their first Super Bowl in 12 years. However, he will owe California more than he earned due to its state laws.
Darnold secured $178,000 with the win. Unfortunately, according to Sportico, “jock taxes” will require him to pay $249,000.
Pro athletes who don’t live in California are required to pay percentages of their yearly income based on the number of days they work in the state.
Darnold and his teammates were there for eight days, which counted as “duty days,” having landed in the Bay Area on February 1. Moreover, they will rack up even more days because of the games they’ll play within California next season.
NFLPA Advised To Spurn California After Sam Darnold’s Plight Comes To Light

Boomer Esiason has advised the NFLPA to refuse to play any Super Bowls in California because of this.
You can hear what he had to say in the video below:
Darnold is currently in the middle of a three-year, $105 million contract with the Seahawks. He’s set to lose $71,000 for winning the Super Bowl.
Fortunately, it’s a price he’s likely to consider a drop in the bucket.
