The Giants now have their answer. NFL insider Ian Rapoport just reported that New York is acquiring quarterback JJ McCarthy from the Vikings. Adam Schefter and Mike Garafolo have also reported the same thing.

The Giants are sending a fifth-round pick to Minnesota in return.

McCarthy Arrives As Insurance Behind Winston

McCarthy was a first-round pick out of Michigan in 2024. The Vikings took him 10th overall. He’d fallen to third on Minnesota’s depth chart this season, buried behind other options at the position. A trade request or a change of scenery felt inevitable.

Rapoport called the move “an intriguing add” for a Giants room that needed depth, and quick. Winston likely remains the starter for now.

JJ McCarthy gives the Giants a younger, cheaper option to develop while Winston holds down the starting job. Whether he sees the field at all this season remains unclear. Much of that depends on how Winston plays and how Dart’s recovery timeline shakes out.
