The New York Giants are moving on from veteran linebacker and defensive captain Bobby Okereke.

In a surprise move, the Giants have informed Bobby Okereke that he’ll be released, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Okereke will now head to free agency, which officially begins on March 11.

By cutting Okereke, the Giants will save $9 million in cap space. Still, his release leaves a leadership void and a hole in the defense that GM Joe Schoen and head coach John Harbaugh must address in free agency.

A former third-round pick (89th overall) of the Indianapolis Colts in 2019, Bobby Okereke signed with New York in 2023. Though the Giants were among football’s worst teams in each of Okereke’s seasons, he was one of the few bright spots on their defense.

Per Football Reference, Okereke recorded four interceptions, 19 pass defenses, seven forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks and 385 tackles during his three seasons with the Giants. There should be plenty of interest in the do-it-all linebacker in free agency.

Many were surprised when the Giants decided to retain Joe Schoen after a dismal 2025 season. To his credit, he started the offseason perfectly by hiring former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.

Releasing Okereke is just the start of what will be a different-looking roster in 2026. The Giants have to bolster their offensive line, wide receiver room, linebacker corps and secondary.

New York owns the No. 5 pick in the draft. They’ll likely target an offensive lineman or defensive player with that pick. Either way, they should get a quality day-one starter with the selection.

With a ton of cap space to work with, Schoen has no excuses. He’s got to make some splashes and improve the roster around Jaxson Dart, who flashed plenty of promise in his rookie year.
