Veteran NFL coach Matt Eberflus didn’t spend much time in the line of unemployment. Following a tumultuous 2025 season with the Dallas Cowboys, Eberflus landed in another iconic franchise to continue his career.
Eberflus joined the Lone Star after another difficult tenure with the Chicago Bears. His prior experience as a defensive coordinator earned him the chance to join Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff, but Eberflus only lasted one season.
His defense ranked last in passing yards allowed (4,521), 31st in touchdowns (35), 31st in interceptions (six), 31st in defensive rate (109.6), 23rd in rushing yards allowed (2,133) and 31st in rushing touchdowns (24).
He had to coach a defense that lost Micah Parsons and had little more to work with, but the results were disappointing. Now, he will coach one of the Cowboys’ bitter rivals.
Matt Eberflus Joins NFC West Team

On Thursday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that Eberflus agreed to join the San Francisco 49ers. He would work as the team’s assistant head coach of defense. With Gus Bradley gone to Tennessee, Eberflus fills the void.

In three years with the Bears, Eberflus posted a 14-32 record. Before joining the NFC North franchise, he spent four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator. Time will tell how he fares with the 49ers, who lost Robert Saleh to Tennessee, too.
