The National Football League Players Association has sent a strong message after eight former NFL players died in 2026. The union asked current and former players to check on one another and take mental health seriously.
The deaths have deeply affected the football community. Many of the players were still young. Some died from sudden health problems. Others were dealing with serious personal struggles. The most recent death has been especially painful.
25-year-old wide receiver Rondale Moore died this week. Authorities found him at home with what they described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Moore had been a player representative, and he is respected across the league.
“Rondale Moore was a complete joy to coach,” said Jeff Brohm, who coached Moore in college. “The ultimate competitor that wouldn’t back down from any challenge. Rondale had a work ethic unmatched by anyone. A great teammate that would come through in any situation. We all love Rondale, we loved his smile and competitive edge that always wanted to please everyone he came in contact with. We offer all of our thoughts and prayers to Rondale and his family, we love him very much.”
NFL Call To Check On Teammates

The NFLPA also made its statement. “The NFL Players Association is devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Rondale Moore,” the union said. “This immense loss is felt deeply across our union, and we value his service as a player rep. Our condolences and prayers are with Rondale’s family, teammates, and loved one during this incredibly difficult time.”
The union also spoke directly to its members. “In moments like this we are reminded of how much our players carry, on and off the field. To our members: Please know that support is always within reach. Check on your teammates and prioritize your mental health. If you or someone you know is struggling, we encourage you to take advantage of the many confidential resources available to you through the NFLPA.”
Seven other former players have also died this year. Former Pro Bowler Tre’ Johnson and former player Josh Cardiello died from sudden medical emergencies, also former veteran Kevin Johnson died at a homeless encampment.
Former running backs Scott Laidlaw and Randy McMillan also passed away. Barry Wilburn died in a house fire. Former quarterback Michael Proctor also died.
Now, the players’ union hopes others will pay attention. It wants players to reach out to each other. It wants them to talk openly. Most of all, it wants them to remember that they are not alone.
