Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has returned to football-related workouts, revealing the significant development 100 days after undergoing surgery to repair his torn ACL.

Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in the Chiefs’ Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, a 16-13 defeat. The loss ended Mahomes’ season and eliminated Kansas City from playoff contention for the first time since 2014.

It’s still unknown if Mahomes will be ready for the start of the 2026 season or how much time he could miss. The good news for Chiefs fans? Mahomes appears to be making excellent progress in his recovery.

On Wednesday, Mahomes posted an Instagram video of himself dropping back and practicing his throws:

It’s been a nice start to the offseason for Kansas City. All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce put retirement on hold and signed a three-year extension, though it’s essentially a one-year contract.

Kansas City also signed Super Bowl 60 MVP Kenneth Walker III in free agency, bolstering a ground game that was among football’s worst last season. If Patrick Mahomes gets the green light to return for Week 1? The vibes won’t be much better in KC.

It’s early to write off Mahomes and the Chiefs after the debacle that was 2025. But it’s not like the 30-year-old quarterback is going to rapidly decline this quickly. And it’s not as if this team lost its championship DNA.

Everything that could go wrong did, in fact, go wrong for Kansas City last year. The Denver Broncos won the AFC West with a 14-3 record, but they’re due for some regression after racking up the one-score wins.

The Los Angeles Chargers will have a heckuva time completing another improbable season-series sweep of their rivals. As long as Mahomes gets back to full health, the Chiefs will re-emerge as a playoff team in 2026.
