Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will have to bring his MVP form for Sunday’s must-win clash against the Houston Texans.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chiefs have listed starting offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor and superstar guard Trey Smith as “doubtful” for Sunday’s clash with the Texans. Taylor is fighting tricep/knee injuries, and Smith is dealing with an ankle issue.

Earlier this week, Kansas City placed star rookie OT Josh Simmons on the injured reserve with a wrist injury. With Simmons sidelined, the Chiefs are likely to be down three of their starting five linemen.

Per ESPN, the Texans rank No. 1 in both total defense (allowing 265.7 yards per game) and scoring defense (allowing 16.5 points per game). Only six teams have more sacks than the Texans (34), and their 12 interceptions are tied for the third-most in football.

The Chiefs are coming off a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. That game drew 57.230 million viewers, making it the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history.

Before the Chiefs’ thrilling comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12, tight end Travis Kelce cited a lack of urgency and discipline behind the club’s struggles. There was more urgency against the Cowboys, but only one team could win the game, which was basically a coin flip.

The Chiefs’ defense has been a problem this year, and Kelce isn’t getting much help from his receivers or running backs. We’ve seen him carry flawed teams to the promised land before (the 2023 championship-winning team was arguably worse than this year’s squad).

There’s a popular saying about teams needing their best players to be their best players. That rings true for the 6-6 Chiefs, who have to win out if they’re to have any hope of making the playoffs this year.
