Patrick Mahomes’ devastating knee injury on Sunday against the Chargers ended his 2025 season. Not only did the star Chiefs quarterback tear his ACL, but he also tore his LCL, according to NFL Network.

That may be why he and the team decided to have his surgery the following day. The 30-year-old underwent surgery Monday for the left ACL tear, the team announced. It was done so in Dallas. Dr. Daniel E. Cooper, the head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys, performed the surgery.

“Patrick Mahomes successfully underwent surgery in Dallas this evening with Dr. Dan Cooper to repair the tear in his left ACL,” the Chiefs posted to X. “Mahomes will begin his rehab process immediately.”

Cooper was the same physician who performed ACL surgery on Giants wideout Malik Nabers. The New York Giants WR went down with a horrific-looking knee injury against the Chargers as well.

The Chiefs’ season concluded when Mahomes suffered his torn ACL. Even if they had won the game, no real success would have happened without him. They had struggled all year with him.

The loss on Sunday eliminated the back-to-back-to-back AFC champions from playoff contention. This injury marks the first significant setback Mahomes has dealt with in his career. Nobody will doubt that Mahomes can’t return to elite form.

However, this injury and the Chiefs’ down year raise some questions about their future. Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes may have played in their final game together. The tight end, who is getting married next year, is unlikely to come back.

It’s clear that an underwhelming offense needs some retooling going forward. First things first, Mahomes needs to get healthy for the 2026 season.
