Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was assigned a new nickname from one of the NFL’s best head coaches. Now, we wait and see if it’ll catch on.

Terry Bradshaw was nicknamed “The Blone Bomber.” Joe Montana was “Joe Cool”. Roger Staubach was “Captain America” and “Captain Comeback.” Tom Brady was “Tommy Terrific.” Brett Favre was “The Gunslinger.” Peyton Manning was “The Sheriff.” Aaron Rodgers is “A-Rod.”

Even though we’re almost a decade into Patrick Mahomes’ career, he still doesn’t have that one signature nickname. Pro Football Reference lists “Showtime,” “Magic Man,” and “The Musician” as nicknames, but neither of those has really caught on.

Speaking to reporters before their ‘Sunday Night Football’ clash at Arrowhead Stadium, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans issued the perfect one-word nickname for Patrick Mahomes.

“Patrick is still Patrick,” Ryans said. “Call him Houdini. Finds a way to make plays all over the field. That’s why this team has always been a threat.”

“Houdini” is a reference to Harry Houdini, a legendary 20th-century magician and stunt performer who specialized in escapology. And of course, few quarterbacks can escape trouble like Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes & Chiefs Are In A Must-Win Situation vs. Texans

Mahomes and the Chiefs are coming off a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving. That game broke the record for the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history, attracting 57.230 million viewers.

The Chiefs haven’t lost more than six games in a season since 2014, when they finished 9-7 in Andy Reid’s second year. They enter Week 14 at 6-6, and probably have to win out to make the playoffs.

Kansas City’s best hope is to win out and hope the 8-4 Indianapolis Colts lose two more games. The Chiefs have the head-to-head tiebreaker over Indy, but not on the other wild-card holders (the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers).

We’ve seen the Chiefs conquer adversity time and time and time again in the Mahomes-Reid era. Lose on Sunday, however, and they’ll certainly be watching the playoffs from their couches.
