Russell Wilson’s one-year stint with the New York Giants was anything but positive. So perhaps it’s only fitting that he might have inadvertently made it worse.

In the offseason, Russell Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Giants worth $10.5 million. But it took just three starts for then-head coach Brian Daboll to make a change, as he gave rookie Jaxson Dart the nod in Week 4.

And when Dart missed two games to injury, the Giants went to Jameis Winston instead of Wilson. Indeed, it was a terrible partnership from the get-go. To make matters worse? Whether he meant to or not, Russell Wilson offered a stunning injury update that could land the Giants in hot water.

Per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Wilson told reporters on Monday that he suffered a hamstring tear before starting in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys:

“I know what I’m capable of. I think I showed that in Dallas, and I want to be able to do that again. You know, and just be ready to rock and roll, and be as healthy as possible and be ready to play ball. You know, I played that (Week 2) game, you know, I tore my hamstring on Friday in practice — the last play of practice. And I had a grade two (tear). I couldn’t tell anybody. I had to go and play on it just because I knew the circumstance, I had to play on it, no matter what.”

As Florio notes, the Giants could be investigated by the NFL, since the injury wasn’t reported at the time:

“He acknowledges he kept it a secret. The question is whether he kept it a secret from the team and, if not, whether the team kept it a secret from the league, from the Cowboys, and from the general public.

Someone had to know. He went to the Mavericks’ training facility for treatment. Someone there knew. The league will want to know whether anyone from the Giants knew.

Although the incident happened before the latest NBA gambling scandal highlighted the perils of inside information, the league will have no choice but to investigate, to make the full results of the investigation public, and to issue punishment if warranted.”

The NFL fined the Baltimore Ravens $100,000 for misinformation on Lamar Jackson’s practice status in October. So, don’t be surprised if a fine comes New York’s way as well.

Responding to Florio’s write-up on the matter, Wilson attempted to shield the Giants from blame:

In that game, Wilson looked like his vintage self with 30 completions for 450 yards and three touchdowns. But Wilson was terrible against the Kansas City Chiefs one week later, finishing with only 160 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

Russell Wilson has also emphasized that he doesn’t plan to retire in 2026. But it’s hard to look around the league and find any team that would realistically sign him to be their starter, so he’ll have to settle on a backup QB job.

Wilson hasn’t played a full season since 2020. He’s 37 and has clearly lost a few steps. Perhaps a rebuilding team like the New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns or Arizona Cardinals will sign him to mentor their next QB.
