Russell Wilson’s tough season with the New York Giants took another strange turn on Sunday. The veteran quarterback, now the team’s third option, faced criticism after he wore his helmet during the overtime coin toss against the Detroit Lions.

Wilson hasn’t played in weeks, but he still joins the coin toss because his teammates chose him as a captain before the season. That title stayed with him even after the Giants moved Jameis Winston ahead of him, while Jaxson Dart remained out with a concussion, and Winston’s words during his first game also got quite popular.

The situation got more intense when TV cameras showed Wilson walking out for the overtime coin toss fully dressed in his helmet and uniform. The Giants later lost 34–27 after Jahmyr Gibbs scored a 69-yard touchdown in overtime. The loss dropped New York to 2–10 and officially ended their playoff hopes before November was over.

Fans reacted fast once the clip hit social media.

One posted, “Russell Wilson having his helmet on is so funny like dude you’re not coming in the game sit down and put your hat on.”

The Giants fan page Talkin’ Giants shared a screenshot of Wilson walking to midfield and added the caption, “Captain Russell Wilson.”

Another fan wrote on X, “I love that Russell Wilson has to suit up every game just to do the coin toss.”

CBS analyst Matt Lively took a softer tone. He wrote, “Russell Wilson still goes out as a captain for the Giants during the coin toss which has to hurt a little.”

Wilson has tried to stay professional even after being benched, but the moment still looked strange to fans during an already rough season. The Giants will continue starting Jameis Winston while Jaxson Dart works through concussion protocol. The offense is still struggling, and the team is trying to find anything that works.

On the other side, Jahmyr Gibbs dominated the game with three touchdowns and 264 total yards, including the long walk-off run in overtime. The Giants now move on to face the New England Patriots on December 1 as another disappointing season winds down.
