You can say what you want about Sam Darnold, just know that he is a man who will compete for a Super Bowl trophy.

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback had everything going against him heading into the NFC Championship Game against the Los Angeles Rams. Star running back Zach Charbonnet is done for the season with a knee injury, taking away Kenneth Walker III’s sidekick.

An injury report from earlier in the week also noted that he could be down as many as three starting offensive linemen against the Rams. Still, he prevailed through it all.

In the aftermath of a drama-filled, 31-27 defeat of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship game, Sam Darnold was asked a notable question. It was about his personal journey that took him back to his days with the New York Jets.

You remember the moment. Sam Darnold’s infamous “seeing ghosts” comment originated during a 2019 Jets-Patriots game. It was a moment that seemingly defined his career early on. He was mic’d up for ESPN and admitted to feeling overwhelmed by New England’s defense.

That moment had followed him ever since. After he led the Seattle Seahawks past the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship, he addressed that remark.

“I almost forgot about it, so thanks. No, you’re joking. You’re good,” he replied to a reporter who brought it up.

“No, I think for me, I, you know, there was a lot that I didn’t know back then,” he said. “So you know, I’m just gonna continue to learn and grow in this great game. You know, there’s a lot of stuff I can get better from today, even.

“I feel like I missed some throws out there that I shouldn’t miss. You know, there were some things offensively that I feel like we can do better, so we’re always looking to get better. I’m always looking to get better, so that’s the great part about this game is, you know, you win an NFC championship, and you win games throughout the season but it’s always ways you can look to get better.”

In the present day, Sam Darnold threw for 4,048 yards and 25 touchdowns this year. He led the Seahawks to a 14-3 record and the NFC’s top seed. These days, it’s rare to see Darnold get too rattled.

On Sunday against the Rams, he threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns, per ESPN. He will now have the chance to win his first Super Bowl.
