Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has made a firm decision on whether he’ll return to work for the 2026 season.

In a stunning announcement, the Bills fired Sean McDermott after their heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round. On Tuesday, the team promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to the HC role.

Unsurprisingly, McDermott drew interest immediately after his exit from Buffalo.

According to Greg Auman of FOX Sports, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers contacted McDermott to see if he wanted to join Todd Bowles’ staff. But Auman adds that McDermott “is expected to take” 2026 off and evaluate his options next year.

This comes days after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Sean McDermott hadn’t spoken to any of the teams with a head coaching vacancy. Rapoport also reported at the time that McDermott would likely take a year off.

The Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders are the only teams that have to fill their head coaching position. On Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns hired ex-Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken as their HC.

The 2027 head coaching hiring cycle is a year away, but it’s hard to think of many better potential candidates than McDermott. Take your pick between him and former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who seems keen on taking the entire year off as well.

McDermott took Buffalo to the playoffs in eight of his nine seasons at the helm. Criticize their lack of postseason success all you want, but that falls on GM Brandon Beane for building a lackluster roster that has relied too much on Josh Allen.

Sean McDermott took over one of the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchises and quickly turned them into a Super Bowl contender. If he’s keen on coaching in 2027, there will be no issue generating interest.
