Amid rumors that the New York Giants could target former free agent defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, more details have emerged on his future in the NFL.

Last July, the Raiders released Christian Wilkins after completing the first season of a four-year, $110 million deal. Afterwards, it was reported that Wilkins was released after “playfully” kissing a teammate’s forehead, an incident that prompted the club to release him.

There are rumors that the Giants may have interest in Wilkins. Take a simple search on X/Twitter, and you’ll find many New York fans calling for the team to sign the former Miami Dolphins star.

But on the latest episode of his “Breaking Big Blue with Jordan Raanan”, the Giants’ ESPN reporter stated that Wilkins’ locker room incident will make it “tough” for him to land another NFL job.

Raanan added that this applies to the Giants, despite Wilkins’ close friendship with Dexter Lawrence (via RaidersBeat.com):

“I mean, whatever happened in that locker room, I don’t know exactly what it was. But on top of the injury part, I think it just sounds like that’s going to be a tough one for for him to overcome and for a team to want to be able to bring him in the locker room. Even if it’s Dexter Dexter. Lawrence is one of his closest friends. It doesn’t sound like that’s one where it’s going to be easy to bring him into your locker room.”

“Some of the things you hear you’re like, ‘Wow, okay, that would be tough to bring in.’ Those are the kind of things that just kind of go through the roof, right? The tornado starts and the rumors and it just starts… I mean, if I even just said some of the things that I heard it would go viral.”

The Giants already have a stout pass rush led by Lawrence, Abdul Carter, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. They also signed former Pro Bowl linebacker Tremaine Edmunds in free agency, so it’s not like they’re desperate for more help in the front seven.

Christian Wilkins’ Career Has Quickly Gone Downhill

The 2019 first-round pick out of Clemson had a sluggish start to his career. Wilkins logged just 3.5 sacks over his first two seasons. In hindsight, Miami would have been better off drafting someone like Brian Burns or Dexter Lawrence.

It looked like Wilkins was finally on the verge of stardom when he broke out with nine sacks in 2023, leading Miami to a surprise playoff appearance. But the Dolphins surprisingly let him walk in free agency, and Wilkins landed the big contract with Vegas.

Wilkins was limited to five games in his first season with the Raiders due to injury. Little did anyone know that 2024 would be his first and final season with the Raiders. And potentially the final campaign of his NFL career.
