The Jets entered Sunday’s opener against Tennessee with real uncertainty at kicker. Jason Sanders won the job just days earlier, despite a rocky preseason that nearly cost him a roster spot entirely.
Sanders spent seven seasons in Miami before missing all of 2025 with a hip injury. Head coach Aaron Glenn stuck with him anyway, naming him the Week 1 starter over recently claimed veteran Blake Grupe.
That decision faced immediate scrutiny once the game actually started.
The Miss Had Folks Convinced It Was Blocked
Facing fourth-and-8 in the second quarter, Sanders lined up for an attempt that would have put NY up 13-3. The kick sailed badly wide left, missing so severely that it barely resembled a normal field goal attempt.
“That’s about as bad a kick as you’ll ever see at the pro level,” one Jets writer shared online, sharing video of the miss. “I was sure it was blocked, but it was just a clean shank.”
“Some are saying this is the worst kick in #NFL history,” uSTADIUM piled on.
The miss handed Tennessee possession trailing by only a touchdown, a costly turn of field position New York couldn’t afford.
“The Jets need to FIRE Aaron Glenn immediately after this game, win or lose. Kicker Jason Sanders was the WORST player in the NFL in the preseason, missing all his FG and extra points. So Glenn tries a 54-yarder with him just now? Sanders misses so badly which every single Jets fan knew would happen. Glenn is totally incompetent,” one fan wrote.
The Kicking Competition Has Been A Season-Long Storyline
Sanders’ struggles trace back to a preseason finale against the Giants, where he missed both an extra point and a 54-yard attempt in the same game. The Jets briefly released him afterward, claimed Grupe off waivers, then brought Sanders back on the practice squad just days later.
New York’s search for stability at the position even extended to a workout with free agent Justin Tucker, the decorated former Ravens kicker, as the team explored every possible option before settling on Sanders for the opener.
Glenn addressed the kicking competition directly before Sunday’s game, insisting the Jets wouldn’t panic despite the shaky preseason performances. Sunday’s miss will likely reignite that conversation immediately, with Grupe still sitting on the active roster as a ready alternative.
Whether Sanders keeps the job beyond Week 1 remains an open question. But he has scored from 33 and 51 yards, plus an extra point, for seven of the Jets’ 20 points heading into the fourth quarter.
