Terry Bradshaw’s old comments about Mike Tomlin have resurfaced, following the latter’s departure from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Tuesday, Mike Tomlin informed the Steelers that he was resigning after 18 years at the helm. The announcement reportedly stunned Steelers players, coming less than 24 hours after they were crushed 30-6 by the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round.

So, Pittsburgh will now have to find its fourth head coach since 1969.

Many Steelers fans had been vocal about their wish for the organization to fire Tomlin. Such is life for a historically proud franchise that has gone nine straight years (and counting) without a playoff win.

But Steelers icon Terry Bradshaw, who led the team to four Super Bowl championships in the 70s, has been calling for Tomlin’s exit since 2016. Old comments he made about Tomlin from a December 2016 episode of FS1’s “Speak For Yourself” program have resurfaced:

“I don’t think he’s a great coach at all. He’s a nice coach…he’s really a great cheerleader guy. I don’t know what he does, but I don’t think that he’s a great coach at all. His name ever pops in my mind when we think of great coaches in the NFL.”

A month later, Bradshaw admitted that he regretted the “cheerleader” comment, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported at the time.

Bradshaw played for another Hall of Fame coach in Chuck Noll. In contrast to the player-friendly Mike Tomlin, Noll was notably hard on his guys. Bradshaw has been vocal about how complicated their relationship was. But as the saying goes, flags fly forever.

Mike Tomlin Can Get Right Back Into Coaching If He Wants A Fresh Opportunity

Like John Harbaugh, Tomlin immediately rises to the top of the rankings for potential head coaching candidates in the 2026 hiring cycle. While Harbaugh is already conducting interviews, it remains to be seen whether Tomlin will want to return to coaching immediately.

If he does? Tomlin won’t have to wait long for a new job. Including Baltimore and Pittsburgh, there are seven head coach openings. It has been reported that the Miami Dolphins will target both Tomlin and Harbaugh, who were the NFL’s two longest-tenured active head coaches before their respective exits.

Other reports indicate that Tomlin may take a hiatus from coaching and do some broadcasting, as Sean Payton did before going to the Denver Broncos in 2023.
