CBS NFL analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has addressed the viral 2023 moment in which he mistakenly called Taylor Swift the “wife” of Travis Kelce.

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have been in a highly publicized relationship for nearly three years. Swift accepted Kelce’s marriage proposal last August, and the two are set to get married on June 13 in Rhode Island.

You may recall that during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Dec. 10, 2023, home game against the Buffalo Bills, Tony Romo referred to Swift as Kelce’s “wife.” Romo quickly corrected himself and called Swift Kelce’s “girlfriend.”

Two weeks later, Romo again called Swift Kelce’s “wife” in the Chiefs’ Christmas Day home game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

During an appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Morning Mash Up” program, Tony Romo was asked about the two “wife” references. More than two years later, he finally broke his silence (via Us Weekly):

“I did, kind of, play with the fans. I think I was like, ‘And there’s…’ I think I said, ‘his wife.’ I did that on purpose and people were like, ‘Do you know something?’ I was like, ‘Nah, I just wanted to make you guys think for a second (and) just mess with you a little bit.’”

Well, he certainly got social media talking. And for a well-paid analyst like Romo, any publicity is good publicity.

Romo completed his ninth season in the CBS broadcast booth last Sunday. The ex-Cowboys star called the AFC Championship Game with play-by-play man Jim Nantz.

Romo received rave reviews during his first few years in the CBS broadcast booth. However, fans have soured toward Romo, though he has certainly made his fair share of mistakes in the booth.

For example, Tony Romo called Josh Allen “Patrick Mahomes” during the Buffalo Bills-Denver Broncos AFC Divisional Round game two weeks ago. And a week earlier, fans ripped Romo for saying the Jacksonville Jaguars could defeat the Bills in the Wild Card Round. The Jags had home advantage and the better record, so his “Captain Obvious” analysis wasn’t exactly insightful.

But Romo agreed to a lucrative 10-year extension with CBS Sports in 2020. He’s not going anywhere. Whether fans like it or not, the tandem of Romo and Nantz are here to stay for the long haul.
