Tony Romo’s Situation Just Got Worse As Under-Fire Analyst Gets Hit With 3 New Citations

A traffic stop back in July has followed Tony Romo well into August. And additional citations have emerged.

Court records show the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office has now formally cited Romo for three separate violations.

According to TMZ, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS Sports broadcaster faces citations for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.

The formal citations follow a traffic stop that’s already reshaped Romo’s broadcasting career.

Tony Romo Was Arrested During A Golf Tournament

Milwaukee County deputies pulled Romo over on July 23 while he drove south on Interstate 43.

He’d just finished competing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship at West Bend Country Club, where he tied for 73rd. Bodycam footage later released showed Romo telling officers he’d had “zero” drinks and was on his way to visit his grandparents.

Deputies described Romo as having red, glassy eyes and an odor of alcohol during the stop. He performed poorly on a standardized field sobriety test before officers took him into custody.

The 46-year-old was booked into Milwaukee County Jail and released the same night. He also refused a chemical breath test after his arrest, resulting in a separate fourth citation issued earlier this month.

CBS Placed Romo On Leave Days After The Arrest

CBS Sports announced Romo would remain on leave “until further notice” roughly a week after his arrest, elevating J.J. Watt to the network’s lead NFL broadcast team alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones addressed the situation publicly during training camp, expressing continued support for Romo despite the circumstances.

“I love him,” Jones said. “I love what he’s about. I love his character. I love his love of sport.”

Wisconsin treats a first-offense OWI as a civil matter rather than a criminal one, meaning Romo likely faces fines rather than jail time or probation.

His court date remains scheduled for Sept. 21, a Monday that falls during Week 2 of the NFL season. CBS continues to assess Romo’s status without setting a firm timeline for any potential return, leaving his broadcasting future unresolved as the season approaches.
