The Miami Dolphins have already made big changes this offseason. The team surprised many people by firing head coach Mike McDaniel. They quickly replaced him with former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Now the team must make a proper decision about quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future.

McDaniel benched Tua late in the 2025 season after he struggled at times. Hafley and his new coaching staff must decide if Tua is still their long-term quarterback. Many people around the NFL believe the team could make a big change. A new rumor says that change might send Tua to a division rival.

NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that the New York Jets could become a possible destination for Tua. The rumor connects to a coaching link. The Jets are reportedly interested in hiring Dolphins quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell as their offensive coordinator. If that happens, it could increase the chances of Tagovailoa joining New York.

The Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. It took him some time to adjust to the league. He showed major improvement in 2023 under coach Mike McDaniel. Tua led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards that season and earned his first Pro Bowl selection.

However, injuries affected his career, especially multiple concussions, which raised serious concerns. He managed to stay healthy throughout the 2025 season, but his performance dropped. Tagovailoa threw a career-high 15 interceptions in just 14 games. The Dolphins’ offense struggled, and the team lost trust in him late in the season.

Because of this, many people believe it might be best for both Tua and the Dolphins to move on and start afresh.

“When teams bring in a new head coach and general manager, there are times when a new era means change at quarterback too,” Anderson wrote on X. “It remains to be seen what happens with Tua who dealt with injuries in 2024 and a benching in 2025. If the Jets end up with Darrell Bevell at OC, it’d be interesting to see if those two reconnect in Florham Park, should he depart the Dolphins.”

Money makes the situation tricky. Tagovailoa has a big contract. If the Dolphins trade him, they would save more salary cap space than if they release him. But Miami would still need another team willing to take him. The New York Jets could be an option, especially if Darrell Bevell gets their offensive coordinator job.

Miami also has several roster problems to fix. The new coaching staff might want a fresh start with a new quarterback. Letting Tagovailoa go would hurt the team at first. Keeping him could also create uncertainty about the team’s future.

The Dolphins must make a decision soon. What they choose to do with Tagovailoa will shape their entire offseason. For now, a surprising division rival could be waiting for him.
