JJ McCarthy just lost his grip on the Minnesota starting job. Kyler Murray won the competition and now sits atop the depth chart.

McCarthy made clear he wants to stay with the Vikings. He pointed to his love for the team, the fans, and the state. Still, new general manager Nolan Teasley holds the final say. He has no prior ties to the young quarterback.

A fresh trade idea has already surfaced. Chris Spiering of ClutchPoints floated a deal that would send McCarthy to the Los Angeles Chargers.

The proposed swap is straightforward.

“The Chargers shouldn’t offer anything more. McCarthy and Lance are both former first-round selections whose NFL careers haven’t unfolded as originally expected. Lance has settled into the backup role behind Herbert, while McCarthy could now find himself in a similar position behind Murray,” Spiering wrote.

“If Minnesota is committed to keeping McCarthy, this conversation never even begins. But what happens if McCarthy asks for a trade? That’s where things become interesting.”

That’s where things become interesting.”

The deal would make much sense for both teams. The Chargers would not need to surrender much. McCarthy would not threaten Herbert’s starting job. Time under Jim Harbaugh could still help the former Michigan star rebuild confidence and refine his game. The two won a national championship together in early 2024.

That shared history makes the pitch intriguing. Harbaugh knows McCarthy’s strengths and limitations better than most. A return to that system might unlock the development Minnesota has struggled to deliver.

JJ McCarthy’s Future Remains Uncertain in Minnesota

McCarthy’s 2025 season never matched the hype that followed his 2024 first-round selection. Injuries and inconsistent play left the door open for Murray. The veteran seized the opportunity during training camp.

Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell has said McCarthy will remain the backup and continue receiving meaningful practice reps. The organization still views him as having a future in purple. McCarthy himself has repeated that Minnesota is where he wants to be.

Yet trade speculation rarely dies quickly once a first-round quarterback drops on the depth chart. Teams always look for low-cost reclamation projects with upside. The Chargers fit that description perfectly given the Harbaugh connection.

Whether the Vikings actually listen remains to be seen. For now, the conversation has started. JJ McCarthy’s next chapter could arrive sooner than expected if Minnesota decides a change of scenery benefits everyone involved.
