Eagles-Vikings updates: Philly leads at halftime thanks to Carson Wentz

MINNEAPOLIS — Greetings from the press box at U.S. Bank Stadium, where the Philadelphia Eagles will look to get back to their winning ways against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

The Eagles (4-2) are reeling a bit from back-to-back losses to the Broncos and Giants. The Vikings (3-2), meanwhile, are coming off a bye week following games in Dublin and London.

The Eagles will be facing Carson Wentz, their former franchise quarterback. Wentz is starting for the fourth time in place of injured starter J.J. McCarthy.

Of course, Wentz watched from the sidelines as Nick Foles and the Eagles won Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium. Understandably, Wentz facing his former team is a major storyline.

Stay tuned here for updates throughout the afternoon.

HALFTIME

Eagles 14, Vikings 6

The Eagles are a bit fortunate to be up eight at halftime. Carson Wentz helped them out tremendously with two interceptions, including an ugly pick-six.

The Eagles’ offense really hasn’t done much, though. After an opening-drive touchdown, Philly went three-and-out on three consecutive drives. Cam Jurgens’ injury has forced Brett Toth to take over at center, which hasn’t helped an already struggling offensive line.

We’ll see if offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo can make some halftime adjustments — or if the Eagles are going to have to grind this game out.

SECOND QUARTER

6:34 — Eagles 14, Vikings 6

The Eagles dodged a bullet there. The Vikings had to settle for a chip-shot field goal after a questionable third-down holding call negated a touchdown to Jalen Nailor. Andrew Mukuba’s brutal missed tackle gave the Vikings a red-zone possession, allowing Justin Jefferson to slip away for a 40-yard gain. Then, Jefferson nearly hauled in a TD but Cooper DeJean did enough in coverage to disrupt the All-Pro receiver. Minimal damage done.

13:26 — Eagles 14, Vikings 3

Birds fans have seen that Carson Wentz before. The former Eagles quarterback failed miserably to diagnose the play, didn’t see Eagles edge rusher Jalyx Hunt drop into coverage and threw it right to him. Hunt, a safety at one point in his college career, snagged his first NFL interception and returned it 39 yards to the house. Credit to Jalen Carter, too, for applying immediate pressure in Wentz’s face.

FIRST QUARTER

2:04 — Eagles 7, Vikings 3

The Vikings respond to the Eagles’ opening-drive TD with a 59-yard field goal. But Minnesota will feel like it missed an opportunity. Thanks in large part to a 34-yard catch by Jordan Addison, the Vikings had first-and-10 at Philly’s 19-yard line. But back-to-back incompletions and a fumble that went over Carson Wentz’s head forced the FG attempt.

6:59 — Eagles 7, Vikings 0

What a start for Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown, as they quiet the raucous Minnesota crowd with a 37-yard touchdown connection on fourth-and-4. The Vikings rushed three and dropped eight, allowing Hurts time to dissect things downfield. Hurts directed Brown to go deep along the sideline, and the receiver obliged. Brown chucked the ball into the stands after his first touchdown since Week 3.
