The Kansas City Chiefs have been handed a major setback heading into their Thanksgiving Day clash against the Dallas Cowboys.
The reigning AFC champions suffered several injuries during their comeback win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, with the most significant to right guard Trey Smith.
The Pro Bowler was rolled up on from behind in the second quarter of the Week 12 fixture and tried returning after getting taped up, but was ruled out for the remainder of the game after being evaluated at halftime.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the player will miss some time, including Thursday’s game against the Cowboys, having sustained both high and low-ankle sprains.
“Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith is dealing with both high- and low-ankle sprains, sources say. Smith is expected to miss some time, including likely against the #Cowboys on Thursday,” Rapoport tweeted on Monday.

This will come as a massive blow to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who needs all the protection he can get as the Chiefs remain in the fight for playoff contention. The signal-caller put on a vintage performance against the Colts on Sunday, willing his team to a win, though he seemed to annoy one of his biggest fans in Tony Romo.
Trey Smith Could Be Out For Up To Six Weeks

The Chiefs were definitely in great spirits after the game. Travis Kelce would deliver a Mahomes impression while speaking to reporters, going viral as a result.
As for Smith, he signed a four-year extension worth $94 million, with $70 million guaranteed, during the offseason. The contract made him the highest-paid offensive guard in league history.
It’s believed that Sunday’s ankle injury could leave him out for anywhere between one and six weeks, depending on the grade of the sprain.
“I’m told that Smith’s injury could cost him anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks, depending on the grade of the high ankle sprain,” Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports writes. “It remains to be seen if injured reserve is an option here. Regardless, it’s a significant blow to the Chiefs’ rushing attack, which just seemed to find its footing in the Week 12 win over the Colts.
Mike Caliendo, who stepped in for him on Sunday, is expected to start in his place. Second-year offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad will function as the interior backup.
Meanwhile, the team has announced a new signing, bringing in a 1,000-yard running back shortly after defeating the Colts on Sunday.
