The Kansas City Chiefs are screwed.

Patrick Mahomes has torn his ACL and is out for the season. He has since had surgery and is on the road to rehabbing for the next six to 9 months. In the meantime, the team has been eliminated from playoff contention. For the first time in his career as a starting quarterback, Patrick Mahomes will fail to reach the AFC Championship game.

The Kansas City Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention after losing 16-13 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Three other scenarios erased any hopes Kansas City had of making the postseason. The Chiefs won’t participate in the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

That is just the start of their problems.

The Kansas City Chiefs are out of the 2026 offseason contention. They can now focus on the offseason. One of the major roster changes is going to come in the 2026 offseason.

Patrick Mahomes has a lot of prayers coming his way. He also has a 78.2-million-dollar cap hit against 2025 space. It has effectively put 26 free agents on the chopping block, according to the latest report by Spotrac.

Kansas City projects to sit roughly $34 million over a projected $304 million league cap. This is easily one of the worst positions in the NFL. It’s not just that massive number. Kansas City has 36 players under contract for the 2026 season. They have more than 25 roster spots either expiring, option-dependent, or vulnerable to release or restructuring.

Mahomes might be missing a good chunk of the 2026 NFL season. He may have also played his final game alongside Travis Kelce.

The future of the Chiefs looks bleak.
