Here’s Why DK Metcalf Punched a Lions Fan & Got Suspended

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf made headlines on Sunday. He seemingly punched a Detroit Lions fan in the second quarter of the Week 16 duel. Metcalf Cameras showed Metcalf seemingly grabbing the fan by his collar before punching him. Other angles showed that Metcalf simply shoved him away.

The former Seattle Seahawks star’s action drew a lot of attention on Sunday. Fans were eager to know what led Metcalf to lose his cool against an opposing fan. Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson shed light on the situation during Monday’s edition of his joint “Nightcap” show with Shannon Sharpe.

Per the Cincinnati Bengals star, the fan made derogatory comments about DK Metcalf’s race and his mother.

“Obviously, I am not condoning putting your hands on a fan or punching the fan but he did call him a racial slur, called him the N-word and he did call his mom a c—t,” Johnson explained to Sharpe.

“I think with those words being exchanged and the fan saying that, I think that’s where the action occurred that he, I think he threw a punch I am not sure if he connected or whatever,” the ex-Bengals wideout continued. “But he did call him the N-word and he did call his mom a c—t… That’s a bad combination and it caused DK to react.”

After a quiet first half, Metcalf finished with four receptions for 42 yards. However, the biggest storylines involving him didn’t happen on the gridiron.

Ryan Kennedy, the Lions fans punched by Metcalf, denied that he attacked the wide receiver’s race or his mother, in a statement released on Monday by a Michigan law firm (via Brooke Pryor of ESPN).

Newly-released fan footage seems to support his side of the story.

The Steelers beat the Lions 28-24 in a dramatic game that was decided on the final play. Ironically, that wasn’t the most controversial incident that transpired during the matchup.

Pittsburgh is now 9-6 on the season. They have a shot to wrap up the AFC North title with two weeks remaining, but they’ll have to do it without their top wideout after the NFL announced a two game suspension for Metcalf.
