San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed the rapidly spreading conspiracy theory linking a local electrical substation to the team’s long list of injuries.

Two weeks ago, a conspiracy theory surfaced that an electrical substation near the San Francisco 49ers’ practice facility may be contributing to the alarming number of injuries the club has suffered over the years.

Peter Cowan first posted about the theory on X/Twitter. Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the post to go viral.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, John Lynch responded to the electrical substation conspiracy theory. Lynch revealed that the team will look into it, citing the importance of the players’ health, per Blake Silverman of Sports Illustrated:

“Because it deals with allegedly the health and safety of our players, I think you have to look into everything. Our guys have been, we’ve been reaching out to anyone and everyone to see does a study exist rather than a guy sticking an apparatus underneath the fence and coming up with a number that I have no idea what that means.

That’s what we know exists, we’ve heard that debunked, so yes, we will look into it. The health and safety of our players is of the utmost priority, we pour into it.”

Among other key points, Lynch revealed that star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is done with the 49ers. Aiyuk didn’t play a snap this season, continuing to recover from a torn ACL he suffered in October 2024. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said at Wednesday’s press conference that previous attempts to communicate with Aiyuk were unsuccessful.

Fred Warner (ankle), Nick Bosa (torn ACL) and Mykel Williams (ACL) all suffered season-ending injuries. That left the defense short-handed for most of the year.

Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, Brock Purdy and Trent Williams all missed time, too. And yet, the 49ers just kept hanging in there and were one win away from clinching the NFC West and No. 1 seed.

Tight end George Kittle tore his Achilles in the 49ers’ Wild Card Round win over the Philadelphia Eagles. San Francisco sure could have used him in their blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round.

But the 49ers reminded the rest of the NFL what they’re capable of. With better health luck next season, they’ll remain a prime contender for Super Bowl 61.
