Bill Belichick was, understandably, said to be baffled by his snubbing for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class.

On Tuesday evening, news broke that Bill Belichick would not be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The 73-year-old and six-time Super Bowl champion didn’t get the mandatory 40 of 50 votes to receive his gold jacket.

The news has stunned the NFL world, and for good reason. He’s arguably the greatest head coach in NFL history, with 302 wins (third-most in league history) and six Super Bowls, the most of any HC.

According to ESPN’s Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham, Belichick told others close to him that he was “puzzled” and “disappointed” by missing the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

“Six Super Bowls isn’t enough?” Bill Belichick asked an associate, per ESPN. “What does a guy have to do?”

Additionally, a source told Natta and Wickersham, “Politics kept him out. He doesn’t believe this is a reflection on his accomplishments.”

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is among the notable NFL figures who expressed confusion:

Belichick had a tough first season (4-8) as HC of the North Carolina Tar Heels. He signed a five-year contract worth $50 million in Dec. 2024, less than a year after leaving the New England Patriots.

Unfortunately, Belichick will not have a spot in Canton to celebrate until 2027 at the earliest.

Bill Belichick Deserves An Explanation From Canton Voters

The Pro Football Hall of Fame voters are not required to publicly explain their decisions regarding which coaches or players they omit from their ballots. But this is Bill Belichick we’re talking about. Definitely, he deserves an explanation.

A coach with three Super Bowl rings should earn first-year eligibility for induction. Let alone six rings. And let alone having the most Super Bowl victories of any football coach.

If Belichick isn’t eligible for Canton in his first year of eligibility? It makes you wonder how long Andy Reid, Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton, John Harbaugh and other top coaches will have to wait. Then again, we shouldn’t forget how long Jimmy Johnson had to wait for his call to the hall.
