Detroit Lions Announce Strange Move That Has Their Entire Fanbase Confused

The Detroit Lions announced an interesting coaching hire that is already receiving immense backlash from fans.
Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions were arguably the NFL’s biggest disappointment of the 2025 season. Coming off a 15-2 record, the best mark in franchise history, the Lions limped to a 9-8 finish and missed the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Detroit wasted little time making changes. Campbell fired offensive coordinator John Morton, even though the Lions finished with the league’s fourth-best scoring offense (28.3 points per game).
The Lions made two new notable coaching hires on Monday. Drew Petzing was named the new offensive coordinator. On top of that, former New York Giants head coach Mike Kafka was hired for “a high-ranking offensive staff role,” per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Kafka finished the 2025 season as the Giants’ interim HC, following the dismissal of head coach Brian Daboll. New York went 2-5 under Kafka and finished 4-13 on the year, leaving fans confused about the Lions’ decision to bring him aboard.

“Bad hire. Maybe he’s using that 1 game against the Giants where he pulled out the trick plays. Other than that Kafka is not really good at calling plays,” a fan stated.

Only time will tell if this move works out for the Detroit Lions. Given how quickly Campbell turned the Lions around, it’s probably best to reserve judgment until we see the on-field product next season.
Detroit Lions Should Re-Emerge As Contenders In 2026

The Lions looked like a contender in the first half of the season. But ultimately, injuries and a lack of difference-makers on defense prevented Campbell’s group from returning to the postseason.
It didn’t help that the team lost superstar tight end Sam LaPorta to a season-ending injury after nine games. Brian Branch, DJ Reed, Tyleik Williams, Alim McNeill, Terrion Arnold and Kerby Joseph all missed significant time, too.
With better health luck, Detroit should re-emerge as a Super Bowl contender in 2026. Of course, GM Brad Holmes will also have plenty of cap space to make the necessary roster upgrades. The secondary and interior offensive lin especially need improvement.
