It appears that Shedeur Sanders could’ve been playing for a different team during the 2025 season. A few days ago, the team wrapped up its head coaching search by hiring former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. The 59-year-old spent the previous three years as the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator under John Harbaugh.

With the Ravens firing John Harbaugh in a surprise move after the regular season, Monken didn’t have to wait long to find a new position. Now he has met his quarterback. The Cleveland Browns posted a video on Friday of quarterback Shedeur Sanders and new head coach Todd Monken meeting for the first time.

After hugging it out with Sanders, Monken dropped some huge news. He could be heard saying, “We tried to draft your ass last year, for God’s sake. It’s all worked out.”

Monken essentially confirmed a report that Sanders was on the Ravens’ radar during the 2025 NFL draft. It was last September when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Ravens planned to select Sanders in the fifth round of the draft. However, they passed when Sanders “let it be known to Baltimore that he didn’t want to be on a roster with Lamar Jackson, where he wouldn’t have a chance to play anytime soon.”

It worked out for everybody in the end.

Todd Monken’s first day back in Browns headquarters had him reminding Shedeur Sanders that they almost worked together last year in Baltimore. Now he will finally get his shot.

Monken was the offensive coordinator in Baltimore for the last three years. After telling the Ravens not to draft him, the Browns then traded up to No. 144 to draft Sanders. That approach worked out as the younger Sanders spent the second half of the season as Cleveland’s starter.

The decision could be a good sign for his chances of getting a shot to continue in the starting role with Monken in Cleveland. As a rookie, Shedeur Sanders began the 2025 offseason fourth on the Browns’ quarterback depth chart. He was behind Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Both Flacco and Pickett were traded, and Gabriel also got injured while struggling. Once Sanders took over, he kept the job. However, his numbers left something to be desired. He completed 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Sanders also rushed for 169 yards and one score.

There is no guarantee Sanders will win the starting job next season, but things are looking up for him.
