Russell Wilson Faces Tough Reality After Losing QB Job To Former Teammate

Former Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson faces a tough reality, as his options to stay in the NFL continue to shrink. Wilson didn’t have the best 2025 with the New York Giants. Brian Daboll benched him for rookie Jaxson Dart after an underwhelming 0-3 start.
Dart and Jameis Winston exchanged starts for the rest of the season, while Wilson fell in the pecking order. He is a free agent now, but the options to start in the league are close to none.
The Kansas City Chiefs were a logical possibility for Wilson since they lost Patrick Mahomes to an ACL injury and Gardner Minshew joined the Arizona Cardinals to replace Kyler Murray, who joined the Minnesota Vikings. Instead, the Chiefs traded for the New York Jets’ Justin Fields, a former teammate of Wilson.
NFL Analyst Makes Grim Prediction For Russell Wilson

In the wake of the Fields trade, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said that the move meant the end of Wilson’s chances to start in the league. The Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders could be options for him, but it might not be likely that he starts.
“His days as a starting quarterback have ended,” Florio wrote. “The only teams with a current vacancy at the top of the depth chart are the Cardinals and the Steelers. A Pittsburgh reunion is highly unlikely, even if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t return.
“The Raiders possibly, maybe would be interested in a short-term bridge, if they aren’t comfortable with putting Fernando Mendoza on the field right away. Wilson may not be inclined to once again be the three-game starter before getting the tap.”
The Giants pivoted to Dart, while having Winston for another year, making a reunion with Wilson unlikely. The Miami Dolphins could land him, but they also have Malik Willis ready to start. The Green Bay Packers could give him a chance, but again, as a backup.
