Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky has raised caution about the Las Vegas Raiders selecting Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft. Orlovsky argued Mendoza may not be the top quarterback in the class, giving that distinction to Alabama’s Ty Simpson. He questioned Mendoza’s ability to perform in high-stakes moments, challenging fans and analysts to point to the biggest games Mendoza faced this past season.

Mendoza excelled in Indiana’s biggest games, winning the Big Ten, Rose, Peach, and National Championship. He threw 15 touchdowns with a 73% completion rate and only two interceptions vs. ranked teams. In three playoff games, the young star had nine total touchdowns with zero turnovers, including wins over Alabama and Oregon.

However, recently, Dan Orlovsky sarcastically praised Mendoza’s ability on X. “What Mendoza does best,” he wrote, tagging the Raiders and leaving their fans to read between the lines. However, scouts continue to praise Mendoza’s mental toughness, accuracy, and ability to perform under pressure, making him a standout NFL prospect despite questions about his arm strength.

While debate remains over Simpson versus Mendoza for the top QB spot, Mendoza’s performance in big games demonstrates he thrives when it matters most. NFL executives note his clutch gene and consistency make him a viable pro starter, leaving Orlovsky’s criticisms increasingly at odds with the evidence.

The Las Vegas Raiders Weigh Options on Fernando Mendoza Ahead of Draft

Raiders general manager John Spytek remains noncommittal on selecting Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick. Mendoza is already learning the Raiders’ offense, working with Brian Griese to install the system. He will throw at Indiana’s Pro Day this week and participate in a private workout with the team next week, giving the Raiders multiple opportunities to evaluate him.

Speaking on ESPN’s “NFL Live,” Spytek said the team is following a process to make the best decision, noting they have yet to finalize their choice despite Mendoza’s strong draft buzz. “We will be there,” Spytek said. “I think it’s prudent that we go to all the touch points that we can to see all the great players that are out there. And I think at any pro day, you just wanna see guys compete and show up and be there for their teammates and put their best foot forward.

Despite being considered the top passer in the draft, some analysts have raised concerns about Mendoza’s arm strength and handling of pressure in the pocket. Spytek emphasized the importance of attending all touchpoints to see how prospects perform and compete before making a final decision.
