ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recently talked about his views on the 2024 presidential election and said he made a mistake. He admitted that he regrets voting for Kamala Harris. Smith shared his thoughts openly during a conversation with former ESPN anchor Sage Steele.

Smith said he once believed Harris could unite both sides and get things done. He now feels that hope did not match reality.

“I also believed she was the kind of person that could work across the aisle in order to get things done,” Smith said. However, he also added, “That was my belief. And then when I saw how things were unfolding and how out in the clouds the Democratic Party was even after they lost the election, I just said, ‘There’s no hope.’ I said, ‘I don’t know what the hell I was thinking about believing that y’all would get it, because you still don’t get it.’”

He said the party failed to adjust. “I lost all faith,” Smith said. He also compared public perception between parties, and he noted that many voters still viewed Donald Trump as more relatable despite ongoing controversies.

Looking Ahead To 2028

Smith said he is not planning to enter politics right now, but he is keeping the option open.

He told The Washington Post that people close to him have encouraged him to consider running in 2028. He added that he would only think about it if he felt the country needed a better option.

“I have no desire to be a politician,” Smith said. “I have no intentions on being a politician, but I left the door open.” He made it clear that he would only step in if he felt both parties failed to offer strong leadership.

If he stays out of the race, Smith already has a few names in mind. He said he would be betting for Josh Shapiro or Wes Moore on the Democratic side. Both leaders have gained attention for their leadership styles.

Smith also surprised many with praise for Marco Rubio. He called Rubio “an adult in the room” and said no one doubts his qualifications.

For now, Smith remains focused on his role at ESPN. Still, he continues to speak out on politics.
